Description of Significance WILLIAM JENKINS WAS THE FIFTH OF SEVEN APPOINTED GOVERNORS OF OKLAHOMA TERRITORY. A LAWYER BY TRADE, HE MADE THE CHEROKEE STRIP RUN IN 1893, STAKING HIS 160 ACRE CLAIM AT THIS SITE. THE HOUSE HE BUILT IN 1893 IS NOW IN RUINS. CONSTRUCTED OF LOCALLY QUARRIED STONE, THE JENKINS HOUSE WAS A SINGLE STORY WITH BASEMENT SIDE GABLED COTTAGE. LISTED IN THE NATIONAL REGISTER 10/14/1976.
